Still Standing Review

Still Standing is written by James Merritt.

The subtitle to the book is 8 Winning Strategies For Facing Tough Times. Using personal examples and examples from the Bible the author highlights eight ways to stand strong when you are going through a tough time.

This is a very encouraging book and it is filled with helpful information. I thought the author was very personable and non-condemning in his writing. I liked the examples he used and liked how he tied each chapter to the others.

The chapters are easy to read and understand. The basic theme of the book can be found in each chapter. The author shows that even though you may feel alone when going through a hard time you are not! You can call on other Christians to support you and rely on the Lord to strengthen you.

I gave this book 5/5 stars. I thought it was an encouraging book that shows you how to turn to the Lord when going through hard times.

I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for the copy of this book I enjoyed reading. I gave an honest review based on my opinion of what I read.

Men of Sunday Review

Men of Sunday is written by Curtis Eichelberger.

This book is about the faith of some athletes involved in the professional sport of football. Using certain topics the author relates the spiritual to the job as a professional athlete.

Some of the titles of the chapters are Overcoming Adversity, What Does It Mean To Lead and Family Sacrifices. Some of the athletes mentioned and discussed were Trent Dilfer, Ray Lewis and Aaron Rodgers.

You do not have to be a football fan to enjoy this book. It is more of a book about Christians who play the professional sport of football. How being a Christian has helped them during different times during their lives is the basic theme of each chapter.

I gave this book 4/5 stars. Although I enjoyed the idea of the book I felt like it would be best for a Christian athlete who was going professional. There was a lot of great advice and places to go to help when trying to keep your faith and play in the sport.

Review of Patchwork Christmas

A Patchwork Christmas Collection is written by Judith Miller, Nancy Moser, and Stephanie Grace Whison.

I liked the 3 different stories in this book. Each story is unique and entertaining. I thought the authors all wrote with their individual style and this made each story enjoyable. The setting for these stories is the late 1800’s during the holiday season. Each story has discussion questions at the end in case you want to read this book with a group.

I liked that the stories were not your typical romance. They had circumstance that could reflect a real life incident. The first story is about a girl who has had her heart broken and must learn to trust and love again. The second story is about a train ride that leads to a very different place then expected. The final story is about doing good for the Lord. Of the three stories this one was the least exciting.

I gave this book 4/5 stars. I liked the first two stories a lot and felt the characters really developed and the story was interesting. The final story was not as well developed and had parts that just did not make sense in the context of the story. I would recommend this book though, and think anyone who likes Christian historical romances will enjoy this book.

Review of Idol Lies

Idol Lies is written by Dee Brestin.

Facing the Truth About Our Deepest Desires is the subtitle to the book. Author Dee Brestin has written another great book to help women in their relationship with the Lord and themselves.

Do you long to be loved? Do you feel unloved? Reading this book will show you that those desires are good but need to be directed at the Lord and not to things on this earth. The author stresses that trying to find your happiness by filling your life with things of the earth will only make the longing stronger. By direction your longings to the Lord, He will fulfill those needs with His love.

I gave this book 4/5 stars for a couple reasons. Where I did like the writing and found the author to be very open I just did not feel any connection. I felt more preached to then talked to. I do however, think the book is helpful and would recommend it to a friend who was having issues of feeling unloved or alone.
